golf holidays in the Canary Islands

Tenerife

Book your Monarch flights to Tenerife

Tenerife is the largest and most popular of the Canary Islands, and attracts over four million visitors each year. Although it's just off the north coast of Africa, it still has a very Spanish feel. The volcanic landscape is spectacular, but the weather is definitely the island's biggest selling point.

For top class all year round golf Tenerife is the ideal destination. Most of the golf courses and accommodation for your golf holiday in Tenerife are featured around the bustling resorts of Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos.

Playa de Las Americas is situated in Adeje, a small town on the southwestern coast. Whenever we're there we spend a lot of time relaxing on the beach or enjoying the wide range of water sports and other activities. It's the liveliest resort on the island, with a variety of nightlife. The golf is good too, with two championship golf courses at Costa Adeje and Golf Las Americas. Green fees on Tenerife are very reasonable.

Los Cristianos is part of Arona, one of the most important tourist areas in the island. It's a coastal fishing village, and it has managed to preserve some of its traditional nature, if you know where to look. We tend to choose Los Cristianos when we're in the mood to see Tenerife's sophisticated side. We've enjoyed some great times in the resort's selection of bars and restaurants and there are also some lovely pavement cafes around the harbour.

Gran Canaria

Book your Monarch flights to Gran Canaria

Whenever we visit Gran Canaria we know we're in for a treat. The island is well known for its year round sunshine and magnificent beaches, but we love its rich historical heritage, its wealth of culture and its amazing food just as much. We've been told that the wonderful weather is due to the influence of the trade winds and the gentle sea currents - but all we know is that the island enjoys one of the best climates in the world. As a result it has been a very popular holiday destination for some time.

In recent years Gran Canaria has also emerged as an up and coming golfing destination. The number of courses on the island has grown steadily and there are now five great places to play. However, golf is certainly no newcomer to Gran Canaria. There's been a strong golfing tradition here since 1891 when the Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas was founded. The first members of the club were from the English Colony on Gran Canaria and they had a strong influence on the birth of the island's tourism industry.

We find the green fees on the island represent very good value. In the low season, from May to September, they can be as little as 50 euros - and that's more than reasonable when you consider the quality of the courses and the facilities available.

But it's impossible to talk about Gran Canaria without eulogising over the beaches. They're the island's most notable natural resource and they cover a quarter of the coastline. Our favourite is Maspalomas, which on its own has over 250 hectares of sand and dunes.

From Maspalomas we like to walk (or get a taxi) into the neighbouring resort of Playa del Ingles, which is the liveliest resort on the island and a great place for party animals!

Lanzarote

Book your Monarch flights to Lanzarote

Whilest Lanzarote cannot really be considered a golfers' paradise, there is currently only one course at Costa Teguise, two new courses at Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca are on the way. Combine these additional courses with the consistently warm climate, little rainfall in winter and Lanzarote is an attractive venue for playing golf all year round.

Situated just 70 miles off the coast of Africa and the most easterly of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote is Volcanic in origin. Due to the recent eruptions during the 18th and 19th Centuries, many parts of Lanzarote appear to be from another world. Amongst the many stunning Volcanic features of Lanzarote is the longest Volcanic Tunnel in the world, the Atlantida Tunnel, which is over 7 km long.

Despite the Volcanic nature of the island, Lanzarote has several beautiful white beaches such as at Playa Blanca and Papagayo and as a result of local authority regulations on the amount and style of development there is no billboard advertising and the only high rise building is the Grand Hotel in Arrecife. Lanzarote is worth considering for your next golf holiday.
